LIZZIE and BIANCA in the park. BIANCA is dressed tastefully but a bit provocatively.

LIZZIE

He’s up to something. He keeps finding reasons not to pay the ransom. He doesn’t like the kidnapper’s tone of voice, or they don’t call on time, or none of them can speak English well enough …

BIANCA

These are the Sicilians?

LIZZIE

The Sicilians and before that the Pakistanis. He thinks we might have more luck with the Russians.

BIANCA

Russian gangsters have them now?

LIZZIE

It’s something he’s working on. I just keep saying, “Make a deal for godsake. You’re playing with our son’s life!”

BIANCA

And what does he say to that?

LIZZIE

“Trust me. This is what I do.”

BIANCA

He’s used to negotiating with criminals?

LIZZIE

Well there are many different kinds of criminals, aren’t there? The point is, this is who he is now. The plotting, strategizing, looking for a way to … win. This is him at his core.

BIANCA

And winning in this situation means?

LIZZIE

I’m not sure. Getting them back without having to give up much.

BIANCA

(reapplying lipstick) Fascinating. Most people would just pay if they had the money. (checking her watch) Okay I have to go. I’m meeting my child’s new nanny. But keep me posted because –

LIZZIE

You’re leaving me in the middle of a discussion about my kidnapped son to meet your child’s new nanny?

BIANCA

My child has a serious mental disability, and I need to be sure his nanny has the proper coping mechanisms.

LIZZIE

Oh …

BIANCA

Now don’t you feel just a little bit petty and selfish?

LIZZIE

Yes. I do.

BIANCA

Good. (starting off) Now like I said, keep me posted. And if you need to talk just call.

LIZZIE

Do you think we might be able to meet in your office next time?

BIANCA

I told you my office is being painted.

BIANCA is gone.

LIZZIE

No, you didn’t.
